How it works.
One goal for 30 days. Each day, one focus block on it and a few small practices from the book. Here is the whole method.
- The Flow Check
- About 4 minutes, once at the start and again on day 30. Optional.
- Each day
- One focus block: 15 minutes to begin with, growing towards about 50.
- Around it
- A few small practices, a few minutes each. Most tick themselves.
Five steps, every day.
The same order each time, so starting stops being a decision.
- 1
Arrive
Open to the next step you saved. If your mind is loud, take the one-minute reset.
- 2
Set up your focus zone
Phone out of reach, tabs closed, notifications off.
- 3
Choose one task
Too big to start? Start smaller: a 15-minute first step, ready in a tap.
- 4
Work one focus block
One thing and a calm timer. Wander, notice, come back.
- 5
Close the loop
Write where you stopped. Then take a real break.
Start at 15 minutes. Grow from there.
Week 1 blocks are short on purpose: showing up matters more than length. When a block feels easy, the app suggests a longer one; when the last two felt long, it suggests a shorter one. From week 2, try 40 to 50 minutes.
Week 1
15 to 25 minutes
Week 2
40 to 50 minutes, two blocks some days
Weeks 3 and 4
About 50 minutes, when concentration holds
Where it leads: the rhythm from Chapter 1 of the book, about 50 minutes of focus and then a 10-minute break that renews you. A goal to grow into, not where you start.
Four weeks. One habit.
The book's 30-day plan, applied to your goal.
- Week 1
Calm the nervous system
Start small and steady. Showing up matters more than length this week.
- One focus block on your goal. 15 to 25 minutes is plenty
- The one-minute reset before you start
- Remove one unnecessary notification
- Week 2
Build focus and habit strength
Longer blocks and a protected focus zone.
- Two focus blocks of 40 to 50 minutes. One is fine on a busy day
- Phone out of reach during your block
- Three open tasks written down for your goal
- Week 3
Strengthen the body and fuel the brain
Let the body support the focus. Adapt each practice to your health.
- One focus block on your goal
- Use a renewal break to walk or stretch
- Water before your block
- Week 4
Expand mind, memory, and purpose
Connect the work to meaning, and make it stick.
- One focus block on your goal
- Explain what you did from memory when you close the loop
- 10 minutes exploring something new about your goal
Days 29 and 30: look back, retake the Flow Check, keep what helped, and choose what comes next: a new goal or another 30 days on this one.
A method for each kind of goal.
Each goal type gets an approach from the book.
- Exam prepRecall, then return. CA Inter, GATE, IELTS, UPSC prelims.
- Learn a skillSmall, repeated, returned to. Python, design, a new language, a certification.
- WriteEffort, then incubation. A thesis, a book, a blog, a newsletter.
- BuildThe Rule of One. A side project, a portfolio, a small business.
- FitnessSmall, steady movement. A first 5K, getting back to the gym, daily walks, strength training.
- Career movePause, then one clear step. A job switch, interview prep.
No streaks. No pings. No guilt.
Missing a day is being human. A blank day stays blank and nothing resets. The app never sends notifications or asks for your attention.
